2020 BMW X2 vs 2020 BMW X3 Comparison in Norwalk, CA

Where did the "Sport" in Sports Utility Vehicle come from, anyway? "Utility," we can get behind. "Vehicle," well, that just makes sense. But what's sporty about a bulky, underpowered, top-heavy and oversized family hauler? Not much -- at least not until you get the engineers at BMW on the job. That's why we prefer to call our SUVs Sports Activity Vehicles. Sure, you can tow a trailer or carry some bags of mulch with these vehicles, but they can do so much more! Most importantly, they can give you a sports car-like driving experience as well as the space you and your family need.

On this page, we're comparing two BMW SAVs side-by-side: The 2020 BMW X2 and 2020 BMW X3. Find out which Sports Activity Vehicle is a better fit for your life below.

2020 BMW X2 vs 2020 BMW X3 Exterior

2020 BMW X2 vs. 2020 BMW X3: Size & Style

The 2020 BMW X3 is a small SUV, and in fact it's the best-selling BMW model in the whole lineup! Meanwhile, the 2020 BMW X2 is derived from the BMW X1 subcompact SUV. The BMW X3 is a Sports Activity Vehicle, meaning it's an SUV with BMW on-road performance and off-road ability. The BMW X2 is a Sports Activity Coupe, similar to a hot hatchback or small station wagon, but with some additional ride height and ruggedness as well as a sleek, sloping roofline.

As a result, the 2020 BMW X3 is roomier inside for passengers and especially for cargo. The 2020 BMW X2 gives you 94.1 cubic feet of passenger volume and up to 50.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats collapsed. For its part, the 2020 BMW X3 provides 101.4 cubic feet of passenger volume and a whopping 62.7 cubic feet of cargo space! They're both spacious enough for the family's daily drive, but the BMW X3 can swallow even more groceries, boxes, suitcases and supplies.

2020 BMW X2 vs. 2020 BMW X3: Comfort & Convenience

The slightly larger and slightly more costly 2020 BMW X3 provides additional features for your investment! Compared to the 2020 BMW X2, the BMW X3 features standard roof rails so you can more easily carry things like bikes and skis. You'll also get heated, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, so glare from the vehicles behind you won't irritate your eyes. These features are available on the BMW X2 as well, but they aren't standard.

On the inside, The 2020 BMW X3 continues to provide outstanding value with standard features like three-zone automatic climate control so everyone can set individual temperature settings. You won't have to carry an unsightly garage door opener around -- just program the built-in universal garage door opener, another standard feature on the BMW X3.

Beyond these differences, you'll find both models share many of the same features, including standard SensaTec leatherette upholstery, LED headlights, 40-20-40 split folding rear seats and other premium options and extras.

2020 BMW X2 vs. 2020 BMW X3: Technology

Both these vehicles feature an 8.8" touch display for managing all your multimedia functions. With built-in navigation, getting where you're going is easy, even if you've never been there before. And with standard Apple CarPlay™, you can connect your iPhone for hands-free app mirroring, audio streaming, calling and texting. Every 2020 BMW model comes with the innovative technology features you want most on your new car!

That said, the 2020 BMW X3 offers one additional bit of technology: BMW Live Cockpit Plus. This digital gauge cluster allows you to see personalized information on a video screen right in the dashboard. This bit of futuristic innovation isn't available on the 2020 BMW X2.

2020 BMW X2 vs 2020 BMW X3 Features

2020 BMW X2 vs. 2020 BMW X3: Performance

Both the 2020 BMW X2 and X3 are powered by a similar 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine at the entry level. Both models generate 258 lb-ft of torque, and the 2020 BMW X2 sDrive28i generates 228 horsepower. The 2020 BMW X3 sDrive30i is a bit heavier, and its engine is tuned to deliver an additional 20 horsepower. With 248 horses at its disposal, the 2020 BMW X3 should provide comparable performance to its little brother.

Both models are also available with xDrive all-wheel drive as an added option. Or, upgrade to a more powerful engine for even more quickness! The 2020 BMW X2 M35i delivers 301 horsepower and a 0-60 MPH time of just 4.7 seconds. The 2020 BMW X3 M40i provides 382 horsepower and will do the same in a brief 4.4 seconds.

A small SUV is a powerful tool for some light towing, but the smaller 2020 BMW X2 is not recommended for towing duty. By contrast, the 2020 BMW X3 offers an available factory trailer hitch that enables it to tow up to 4,400 pounds with ease.
